Aliens VS Predator : At a glance review

By Alexis

Just over a month ago, my dad decided to buy me the new AVP game. My dad might not be currently aware of which games are good or not, but he decided on the game based on the fact that I loved the movie series. In my opinion, it wasn’t a bad choice.

Having only played the game a bit, I already know I’ll like the rest. I’ll probably also get freaked out once again like every Aliens movie has done to me. If you have no idea of AVP, wiki it. The game itself has three varying plots based on who you choose to play as; Marine, Predator, or Alien. However all these plots combine to give an overall plot arc. An avid fan like myself should be able to follow the story without interruption.

To start off with, I’ll start out with all the common criticisms I am able to think of for this game:

  1. Not always exciting.
  2. Poor graphics.
  3. Disappointing like similar games in the franchise.

I think that 1 and 3 can be grouped, and so will address these both together. Firstly, to say that this game is disappointing like the other games is wrong. Having owned Predator: Concrete Jungle, I know what the other games were like and know how much of a disappointment it was. The fact that a Predator, normally known for his dominance over the humans, yet easily killed by them was a game-breaker . I must say though that with AVP this isn’t the case, and you can definitely feel a lot more dominating. And that really is why the game is so much better; the Aliens and Predators in this game can completely destroy the humans, and whilst you can play as the humans (lets face it, why would you want to?), it really does feel exciting and often had meĀ  quite shocked at how suddenly things could explode into action.

The next thing is that the graphics are poor by current standards. I must admit it’s no Crysis, but the textures are well detailed and the lighting effects are impressive. Ceilings are often neglected in games, but AVP has applied the same high-resolution brush to these as well, and it definately helps keep you in the story. One noticeable detraction is the lack of anti-aliasing, resulting in some jagged character models.

In my opinion the game is a good laugh, and certainly an improvement on the previous games. It’s solid, if a litte lacking in places but enjoyable nonetheless.

8/10

Till next time
